Let us start right out by saying that you may not want to know. Every relationship is different, and certainly so is every marriage. There is some common ground, however, and it lies in the area of trust and familiarity.

If you have what is commonly known as an "open marriage", you may not have to wonder or care to know for certain. If you are among the majority of married folks who expect their spouse to be faithful, it's a different story. Changes in behavior patterns often suggest some outside influence. Is your spouse staying later and later at "work"? This activity does not necessarily mean that anything is wrong. He or she may just be ambitious! If that's the case you may want to applaud and keep dinner warm. If the job is just to pay the rent and your spouse has shown no real enthusiasm for it in the past, it may be time to ask some searching questions.

Lack of sex - A more "telling" activity is the lack of it! Most marriages, after the initial period of excitement and discovery, tend to settle down into a basic routine. This is not altogether a matter of your sex life, although that is certainly a key factor. Your spouse may not call from work (or from home) every day to say "Hello" and "I love you". On the other hand, if that was an expected call and you are not getting it, you have to wonder if their interest has waned.

Lack of communication - One of the most common, and hardest to interpret, changes is simply a lack of communication. If you and your spouse are among those who like to share every aspect of your lives, this lack can be devastating. If, when asked, "How was your day?" your spouse used to tell you all about it, and now they're just saying, "Oh, it was OK", something is amiss. This does not necessarily mean they're cheating, but what happened to all that "sharing"?
